What is Horticultural Therapy?

  Horticultural Therapists use plants and horticultural activities to support individuals/groups reach cognitive, physical, social, or emotional goals. Examples of a client's treatment goals might include: improving focus, anger management, alleviation of anxiety or depression symptoms, improving fine or gross motor skills, learning transferable skills to increase employment opportunities.

Registered horticultural therapists (HTR) in The United States receive their credentialing through The American Horticultural Therapy Association. This registration requires an undergraduate degree, and approved coursework in horticultural therapy, horticulture as well as psychology and counseling. A mandatory internship must be completed under the supervision of a registered HTR.

Who We Serve

This statewide network connects horticultural therapists, students and allied professionals to enhance the practice of HT. Members work in many fields and serve different populations, including: elders with dementia and Alzheimer's disease, adults with developmental disabilities, individuals seeking support in addiction recovery,   incarcerated youth and adults, individuals struggling with mental illness.
